It is one of the most intriguing lakes in the Adirondacks. Only 6 miles long, it boasts 99 miles of shoreline, making Raquette Lake the largest natural lake in the Central Adirondacks. Boaters and canoeists will find many wonderful bays to explore. Two marinas and a substantial public boat dock support boating; and fishermen have found a wide variety of game fish in Raquette Lake, including Lake Trout, Small and Largemouth Bass, Brook Trout, Whitefish and Bullhead. Tioga Point Campground, on the eastern shore of Raquette Lake and only accessible by boat, offers a unique camping experience, while the Golden Beach State Campsite and Brown’s Tract State Campsite are both located near the village and are easily accessible by car and RV.

The close proximity to the Blue Mountain Wilderness Area, the Pigeon Lake Wilderness Area and the Sargent Ponds Wild Forest have made backpacking and canoeing very popular activities in the summer. And snowmobilers find Raquette Lake is an excellent side trip from the Old Forge trail system by NYS Corridor Trail 8B from Eagle Bay or Inlet. In addition to lodging and restaurants to meet visitors needs, the W.W. Durant, a reproduction of one of the original steamships used on Raquette Lake during the Gilded Age, provides the unique opportunity to dine while enjoying a narrated cruise of the lake.

Visitors can also take a ride on the mailboat as it delivers the mail to residences around the lake. Great Camp Sagamore, a National Historic Landmark dating from 1897 was built by William West Durant. It was the summer retreat of the Alfred G. Vanderbilt family for over 50 years. Sagamore is the only Adirondack Great Camp open to the public and offers residential learning programs, conferences, and tours from May to October. When you get to Raquette Lake you’ll find fun, food and a warm welcome awaiting you.
