Sled Dog Races forced to cancel - lack of snow causes unsafe trail conditions – Frozen Fire & Lights still on schedule!

The Inlet Area Business Association’s Sled Dog Committee was forced to cancel this year’s Adirondack Bank Sled Dog Races, February 20 & 21, 2010, because Mother Nature has not cooperated. Dawn Brown of Lowville, 2009 New York State Sled Dog Race Champion, toured the course with committee chair Dale Stanton on Monday, February 8, and determined that more than 18 inches of good snow would be needed within one week to make the track safe for the dogs and their mushers. Dawn thanked the volunteers and town employees who had spent many hours grooming the trail and prepping it, but stated that there is just not enough snow on the track edges to make it safe.

Despite the canceled races, Inlet’s Frozen Fire & Lights event will still take place on Saturday, February 20, 2010.

At the Start/Finish Line behind Murdock Trucking Mitch Lee and others will lead a snowshoe hike along the racecourse that starts at 10 am.

At Fern Park there is free cross-country skiing, snowshoeing, ice skating & sledding. Ice skates, snowshoes and skis avail to rent locally. Bring your own plastic sled for hill. Beginning at 10am a bonfire will be lit and complimentary cocoa & donuts will be available. At 10am the construction of a snow fort will begin. There will be some supplies available to use or bring your own. 10am-2pm the Herkimer County Humane Society will hold a dog adoption clinic. A live remote will be set up by radio station 92.7 “The Wave” 11am-2pm. From 12 noon-3pm a dog sled and props will be set up for a photo op with your pet. Bring your dog and bring your camera to get some great shots! 1-3pm there will be music in the pavilion for ice skating.

The Inlet Public Library will hold a Book Sale from 11am-2pm.

Check out the snow sculpture in front of the Inlet Town Hall created by Gregg Rudd. Also at the town hall from 2:30-4:30pm a Noah’s Ark Animal Workshop will be held benefiting the Inlet Youth Commission.

At 5:00 pm a much larger bonfire will be lit at Arrowhead Park with free hot dogs, cocoa & donuts. And at 7pm there will be a spectacular display of fireworks over the frozen snow.

Immediately following the fireworks there will be Wine & Chocolate Sampling at Matt’s Draft House.

All weekend long enjoy the small-town hospitality of Inlet’s shops, restaurants & accommodations.

This weekend is being made possible by the Town of Inlet, the Inlet Area Business Association, the Central Adirondack Association and tremendous amount of local support. For more information go to www.inletny.com or call 1-866-GO INLET.
